Arie Freiberg AM

Emeritus Professor of Law, Monash University

 

Arie Freiberg AM is an Emeritus Professor of Law at Monash University. He was Dean of the Faculty Law at Monash University between 2004 and 2012 before which he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2003. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of Law. In 2009 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to law, particularly in the fields of criminology and reform related to sentencing, legal education and academic leadership. He is currently a member of the Board of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Judicial College of Victoria.

His particular areas of expertise are sentencing, non-adversarial justice and regulation and has authored around 190 publications in areas such as sentencing, criminal justice, regulatory theory and casino regulation. He is the author of Regulation in Australia, 2nd ed. 2025.
